As usual the Video Music Awards did not disappoint this year when it came to shocks – both in news and fashion! The big shock of the night was of course Beyonce’s baby news, but when it came to fashion it was a night of madness.

The maddest of the night was of course Lady Gaga – who decided to come as alter-ego Joe Calderone. We loved Gaga’s “boyfriend” who randomly yelled – ‘YEAAAAHHHH’ in a growl everytime she (or should we say he) graced the stage. Keeping up the act for the evening Gaga even tried a snog with Britney!

Next came some crazy fashion statements from both Katy Perry, who changed outfits quite a few times, and Nicki Minaj, who, well we don’t know what she came as! Looking more like cartoon characters than singers, the stars both managed to take home Moonmen!

We loved how this year many stars gave mention to shocks of the previous years. Katy Perry mention Kanye’s famed Taylor Swift interruption and Britney said “I’ve done that already’ when Gaga tried it on – referring to the famed Madonna kiss. The off the wall stars, despite their madness this year, couldn’t quite match up to the shocks of previous shows. Here are our top five:

Coming in at number five it’s the King of Pop. The shocked 1994 VMA audience played witness to one of the most awkward kisses ever. As the pair walked onstage to an applause, Michael said: “to think, nobody thought THIS would last’. It was then that he whipped off his shades and pounced on his newly-wed wife, looking more like an attack than a show of affection. He had never been seen so intimate with anyone in public before this and it was a shock to the crowd and the world!

A style choice was what caused a stir at the 1999 VMAs and comes in at number 4 on the list. The culprit was Lil Kim, who took to the red carpet wearing a very revealing purple number with only a sticker to cover her left breast. Later in the evening the singer, who was also in a purple wig, took to the stage to present an award with Mary J Blige. It was when superstar Diana Ross joined the pair, however, that caused the shocker as  she copped a feel of Kim’s exposed breast! The shocked audience thought she would be the last woman to give the rapper a fondle!

Britney Spears, a regular on the shocker list, comes in at number 3. After being away for some time, shaving her head and having a mental breakdown, everyone had high hopes for her comeback. However, when she stepped onto the 2007 VMA stage to perform her new song ‘Gimme More’ hopes of seeing the old Britney were dashed. With celebrities like Rihanna looking on and laughing, it was clear she was not ready to be back onstage. The slightly out of shape singer mimed awkwardly and struggled to remember the dance moves. The state of the Britney, who used to rule the VMA stage, shocked us all.

The second most shocking moment at the VMAs was… the famed Kanye West ambush. The hip hop star arguably ruined his reputation with 10 fateful words ‘Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time’. The star jumped onto the stage as the innocent Taylor Swift was accepting the award for Best Female Video. He grabbed the microphone from the shocked teen and began ranting that it was Beyonce (who looked horrified) who should have taken the award. Taylor looked like a lost puppy and as the horror continued the audience cringed with shame before jumping up in a standing ovation to support Miss Swift. It was Beyonce who later invited Taylor onto the stage to finish her acceptance speech that saved the day, but Kanye, who later apologised, has never been looked at in quite the same way since.

Finally the number 1 most shocking moment at the VMAs was… The Britney and Madonna Kiss! Many will remember the kiss between Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. With Britney and Christina taking to the stage to remake shocker number 10, it was always going to be high on the list. As Madonna locked lips with Britney and Christina, the moment caused audible gasps and hit headlines the next morning all over the world, though it was Britney and Madonna who received the most press. Poor Christina, it seems, was not as shocking. This may be because the corruption of good little Miss Spears was the real shocker – the girl was finally a woman!
