Tulisa Launches Her Own Fragrance

Yesterday, rising star and X-Factor judge Tulisa launched her own celebrity fragrance ‘The Female Boss.’ A year ago, releasing an eponymous scent probably wouldn’t have crossed the N-Dubz star’s mind, but now she has beaten her predecessor Cheryl Cole to the fragrance game. The floral scent, which is bottled in a tall pink glass, contains heart notes of jasmine, rose and peach; all aimed to make you feel (and smell) powerful and strong. Of course, Tulisa is just one name in a long line of celebrity-endorsed fragrances.

The top 10 best-selling celebrity fragrances in 2010 brought in a whopping $215 million to the US, according to Euromonitor International, proving the power of the celeb scent! Beyoncé launched her first fragrance, Heat, in 2010 and the fiery strong scent proved a hit with fans, making $21 million in sales and becoming the 3rd bestselling celebrity perfume last year. For a little bottle, that is packing one hell of a punch! Other major US stars such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwen Stefani and Jessica Simpson have also had huge success, each raking in $18 million from fragrance sales alone.

With the rise of social networks, celebrities can also advertise their perfume cheaply and quickly, to maximum effect. When Rihanna’s Reb’l Fluer launched this February, she released a one minute video online which spread virally among her millions of Twitter and Facebook followers. Let’s not forget teenage pop sensation Justin Bieber’s first fragrance ‘Someday.’ Through combined advertising efforts, Someday reached $3 million worth of sales in the first three weeks it was available, exclusively at Macy’s. That’s a lot of over excitable girls!

Tulisa’s ‘The Female Boss’ has been created to capture a strong, sexy and powerful style. While she may never wear her own fragrance, fans can feel like they connect with the real Tulisa (after all smell is the most powerful of the human senses) by wearing her scent. This may go part way to explaining why celebrity fragrances are so popular and consumers will even purchase without smelling first!

Needless to say, not all celebrity endorsed perfumes have been a hit. ‘Alex’ by footballer’s wife Alex Curran has all but disappeared off the shelves and she has not released any further scents since. Worlds apart, business tycoon Donald Trump also tried to add another string to his bow by launching ‘Donald Trump: The Fragrance,’ which failed spectacularly. Naomi Campbell’s mysterious ‘Deluxe Cat’ perfume was certainly one of her better kept secrets and one that we may never have the pleasure (or displeasure) of smelling!
