The only way is UP!

‘Tis the season for the up do! From sleek top knots to voluminous sweeps, the only way to wear your hair is up! Up dos work particularly well with heavily embellished/statement dresses, so the outfit can really do all the talking. We take a look at our favourite celebrities wearing their hair up and tell you how to achieve the look.

The Slick
Blessed with big eyes, a full pout and flawless skin? Then the slick could do just the trick for you. Take notes from supermodel Miranda Kerr who wore her hair side parted and tightly slicked for the MOMA benefit. Day old hair works best with this style, as pesky fly-aways are less pronounced. Use a comb and a 10 pence piece sized amount of gel to smooth down the scalp area. Tie into a bun or ponytail at the nape of the neck et voila! We love the way Miranda has teamed her slick with a statement Peter Pilotto dress and a berry pout!

The Wavy Bangs
If you have bangs, sometimes getting a fringe to stay slicked in place can be hard. However, that doesn’t mean up dos aren’t for you. At the recent Museum of Contemporary Arts Gala in LA, Nicole Richie left her bangs out of her up-do for an easy breezy bohemian look. We love the way this relaxed hair style complimented her romantic lilac Julien Macdonald gown. To achieve this look, don’t straighten your fringe to keep it loose and unstructured. Pull out sections of hair on either side and pin the rest loosely at the back.

The Super High Top Knot
If anyone can rock a super high, super cool top knot it is Gwen Stefani. We love the way she teamed this kooky do with an even kookier suit and her trademark red pout. The style works because she has an enviable oval face (the perfect shape) and her bright blonde colour keeps it looking fresh and fun. To achieve this look, make sure to use a volumising mousse and be prepared to tease if you are not blessed with thick hair. Pull out a few strands to frame the face and you are ready to make any Harajuku girl proud!

The Classic Beehive
One of the hardest up dos to achieve, but undoubtedly the most glamorous, the beehive is classic, sophisticated and chic. We love Emma’s glossy natural red hair colour and the beehive style compliments her printed maxi dress. To get this look, hairspray and backcombing is a must for the lower sections, although the top layer should be smoothed with a big rounded brush. Keep a small section out of the ‘hive to tuck behind the ears. Finally, twist the remaining hair and pin with a large clip. It may be useful to enlist the help of a willing friend to get this party perfect hairstyle!

The Faux ’20s Bob
If you have always wanted a bob but been too scared to go for the chop, clever styling tricks can help you fake the look for a glam event! We adore Jessica Alba’s cute finger waved style, something quite different from her usually flowing lengths. Start by centre parting the hair before waving the front layers with a tong. Brush through using just your fingers to separate and pin and fold the rest of the hair under at the back. To finish, use the smallest amount of gel to flatten and smooth hair either side of the parting. Jessica Alba gave this style a modern twist with a shimmering metallic take on the smoky eye and a nude lip. Gorgeous!
