What: Country breaks for city girls and guys
Why: They should rename the hotel to The Lux in Rye
Where: The George in Rye
Sometimes you just need to get away from London. You get bored of the city being busy, grey and depressing. Sometimes even the hottest bars and clubs can’t make you feel any better. The only way out is not heading to Essex, but to the real countryside.
A few weeks back I was feeling particularly blegh (that’s a scientific term) and decided that a little mini-break in the country was in order. Unfortunately for my wallet, you can’t take the luxury out of me, so I asked around for a fabulous hotel somewhere not too far and all the fingers pointed to The George in Rye.
I had never even heard of Rye, let alone the hotel, and decided to take the plunge and pack the bags for the husband and I, jump in the car and head to Rye.
A couple of hours later we arrived in the quaint town of Rye, about an hour south of Dover. It is a cute little town with narrow cobblestoned alleys, little boutiques and coffee shops. Like a beacon of style and good taste, The George in Rye sits on the main road and with it’s fairly grand exterior it makes a great first impression. On entering we were welcomes by a friendly reception and lounge area (I already couldn’t wait to be seated in the bar).
After a quick check-in we were escorted into our room. I had booked us into a junior suite and as we stepped in through the french doors, I knew I had made the right choice. The room oozes comfort and style. “The Miami” is decorated in crisp white and lime green. The upstairs bedroom has all the usual suspects and the biggest bed I have seen in years. Turns out it was like laying on a bed of clouds – comfy x 1000.
Downstairs was our bathroom, the white theme continued with some very shiny accessories. Fluffy bathrobes and towels, double vanity and a beautiful free standing bath. If this isn’t luxury, I don’t know what is!
The next two days was spent on what can only be described as Rye Cloud. The George in Rye is luxurious country to the max. The staff are incredibly friendly and efficient and we abused room service like it was going out of fashion. It was an absolute pleasure to spend the weekend and I’m already trying to book another week for next year. If not only to stay in the same room, but to have more of the mini choc muffins at breakfast. Noms.
If you are used to five star service and surroundings in London or in any other big city, you should go and visit the cuteness that is The George in Rye. Not trying to put anyone down, but some of the London top hotels could learn a trick or two from this place…
