We may have taken cues from Isabel Marant this season, adopting the new native trend of rich Navajo prints, plenty of fringing and a mis-match of textures, but for S/S there is a move away from the West to embrace fashions influenced by more far flung locations, as global traveller returns in full force. The most eclectic of trends are influenced by everything from Indian flea markets to African tribal prints – look out for wooden accessories, fringing, beading, embroidery and (faux) fur trims. Earthy colours and rich patterns lie at the core, as does mixing, matching and layering to obtain a sophisticated and well-travelled feel.
Global Traveller is quite often resurrected in the sunny seasons with Christopher Bailey heavily drawing inspiration from the trend for his SS12 collection. The colour palate was rich, yet natural; plums, forest green, bronze and mustard ran throughout, influenced by the earth and the heavy hues of late summer. Tops were given texture with wooden beads and woven raffia in shades of mustard, navy and plum. Burberry’s infamous trench coat designs were updated with raffia weaving and hoods of parka jackets were trimmed with yet more spiky raffia. Stoles were also utilised, but instead of the fur seen all over the A/W catwalks, shaggy fringing gathered together to give the ensembles yet another rich, textural element. In short, a homage to all things handmade and natural, the African influence was seen most in the cotton dresses and sarongs made from graphic prints in bold shades orange, black, yellow and purple.
If Bailey reignites a trend, then the fashion press will always follow suite. We predict big things for global traveller this coming S/S. Those less convinced, can try adding in a small element to any outfit. Take a bright beaded necklace or a raffia clutch bag. Team a voluminous printed and gathered skirt with a more classic upper half; such as a white shirt or black singlet. Or look to the Burberry catwalk to see how to go all out global traveller next season. Exotic holiday need not apply!
