Spring/Summer 2012 Trends

NYFW has barely finished yet we have seen some recurring trends emerging, which has us more than excited about S/S next year. The sunnier seasons promise colour, pattern and drama from casual separates to unstructured layering. iFashion has compiled a list of our favourite S/S 2012 trends and the designers that brought them to life.

FLOATY LAYERING

Chiffon gowns with floaty hemlines in white and sorbet colours, sashayed down the runway at the Jenny Packman show. Vera Wang also indulged in springtime romance, with a collection filled with long, transparent layers and feminine frills. This sumptuous trend is all about keeping it loose and light to create an ethereal and airy vibe.

MOTORCYCLE ROCKER

If fetish is paving its way to becoming a big trend this A/W, the tough girl look for S/S, motorcycle chic is decidedly sportier and less structured. Alexander Wang created his whole collection around this; mesh vests featured heavily as did graphic chevron stripes depicting a life in the fast lane. We particularly loved the emphasis on laser cut fretwork which gave leather separates a luxe appeal.

PASTELS

Preen championed a futuristic take on pastel colour print, in a look that contrasted brilliantly with the prim Victorian structure of the garments. Canary yellow and fluro pinks seamlessly combined with chalky lilac and cornflower blue. The colours were blown up onto the fabrics like magnified pixels, making a fun and modern statement. Philip Lim also played with pastels, albeit in a paired down minimalist way.

ORANGE AND CANARY YELLOW

If two colours re-accured throughout NYFW, bright orange and canary yellow certainly owned the runway. Marc by Marc Jacobs embraced sunny brights with dresses, structured t-shirts and A-line skirts in the orange shade du jour. Vera Wang added splashes of canary yellow to dramatic patterns before models walked down the runway wearing the colour from head to toe.

SPORTSWEAR INSPIRED SEPARATES

Sporty Luxe is huge for S/S 2011, fusing comfort, fashion and sensible minimalism. Philip Lim, reigning King of insouciance, stayed true to his roots in a collection of effortless separates. Layering, streamline silhouettes and relaxed fabrics created the aura of sporty sophistication. Theyskens Theory created much the same aesthetic in his collection, which was a little more ambitious in fabric and proportions. The separates were matched harmoniously, maintaining Theyskens cool-girl vibe with the American Sportswear appeal of the brand Theory. Instantly wearable, this is one trend high on our radar.

DRAMATIC FLORALS

Bold floral inspired patterns were seen thundering down the runway at the Jason Wu show. The monochromatic floral print added drama to sensible shirts and pleated skirts. Peter Som too included large floral prints in his collection, although bold, bright colours went hand in hand with the loud prints.
