How would you feel about owning the wardrobe of a Hollywood legend? Some very lucky and very wealthy Elizabeth Taylor fans now do, as last night her wardrobe of haute couture garments and extensive jewel collection was auctioned off. Altogether it raised a huge $2.6m, making a new record for fashion auctions. Held by Christies fine art auctioneers in New York, the estimated sale worth was beaten by more than 60 times as bidders from all over the globe were vying for a piece of the collection.

Among the many items, the highest bid was for a Christian Dior evening gown and matching purse, which reached an unimaginable $362,500. Even some of Elizabeth’s wedding memorabilia was sold, including a gown and wedding bands from her marriages to Richard Burton.

We can only imagine the beautiful items, which now have new homes internationally. Versace, Valentino, Dior and Yves Saint Laurent were just some of the designer garments that made up her glamorous wardrobe. One movie fanatic managed to get his hands on the yellow robe Elizabeth wore in her role as Cleopatra for $62,500 while reality TV star Kim Kardashian put in the highest bid for three Lorranise Schwatz bangle bracelets.
