In part two of our interview with Rihanna she talks designers, that MET Ball dress and her love life.
Which designers do you admire?
Dolce and Gabbana, I love their stuff. They are on point with the new
image. D-Squared. Jean Paul Gaultier, I love his stuff. Zac Posen – he is
the best! I also love Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney.
You wore Stella McCartney at this year’s MET Ball didn’t you? You looked
amazing.
Thank you! I felt amazing. It was a custom made piece that Stella designed from scratch with me. We did it
over the Internet because we are both very busy. I felt so privileged
because it was a really big night in fashion and she was being honoured that
night and I was wearing one of her gowns.
And you had your hair in the beautiful long red braid…
Yeah I wanted to funk my dress up a bit. It was such a sophisticated
piece and I always throw in a little edge no matter what I’m wearing.
What is your favourite Alexander McQueen memory?
I would have to say that I love his vintage pieces, his archive pieces,
I love how they come out. I mean, Lady GaGa at the VMAs, that was
definitely a big night for Alexander McQueen in pop music and I love that
she pulled out vintage pieces rather than the new more contemporary stuff.
She went in to the archive for pieces that people, or at least a lot of people, have never really seen before.
You are a sassy young women but how much of a bad girl are you? Do you
have lots of secret piercings and tattoos?
I like tattoos. I have four but most of them are hidden. One is a
Sanskrit word, one is a star, one is a music note and the other is a Pisces
sign.
How do you feel when you see yourself gracing the front covers of
magazines?
It’s always an honour. I have done a lot of photoshoots for magazines but
it’s always great to be shot for a cover because you know that you are
looked at as a fashion icon.
Whose style do you admire?
I take a lot of inspiration from Madonna, more on stage. I love her
costumes, they’re so creative and they’re very bold and fearless. They make
her seem like a very powerful, independent woman.
Do you take a long time to decide what to wear?
Well, I love playing with fashion. I’m very spontaneous – the best
outfits from me come from not thinking about it. When I was growing up in
Barbados, I actually learned about fashion from reading magazines and
tearing out stuff that I thought was hot.
Do you have any pre-red carpet rituals?
I always turn the music on. I just blast it. And it’s always fun when my
girlfriends are around! You do each other’s make-up and each other’s hair,
and you help each other pick out clothes. That’s the fun part. It’s more fun
getting ready than actually being at the party.
You are a great ambassador for sexy women without being too thin…
I don’t think any woman will be happy with their body or shape. Nothing
is ever good enough and the grass is always greener. I think all women feel
like that. We all come in all different shapes, sizes and curves.
Are you single or are you in a relationship?
Single.
What is the first thing that attracts you to a guy?
His smile. Definitely. A nice smile is always a winner. And perhaps some
facial hair.
Do you think men are intimidated by you?
Not to sound crazy but yes. And I think that is what makes finding
someone so difficult because I am a lot for them to handle. Especially being
in the public eye, it can be difficult and it can be tricky. I am single now
but one day I hope there will be someone who is not intimidated or not
afraid to put me in my place.
