New York Fashion Week began last week and gave us some inspiration for what we’ll be wearing next spring. The trends edging their way to the forefront have so far have been ‘90s, sportswear and rich tailoring.
Canary yellow was a definite winner, as well as monochrome, navy and the summery whites and creams. Where Derek Lam gave us ready to wear fabrics and graphic prints and for spring, Altuzarra went for sexy monochrome contrasted with vibrant tropical prints.
Jenny Packham showed yesterday. With elegant gowns, as expected from Packham, as well as midi hems and playsuits it’s no wonder the celebs love her. Perfect for the summer BBQ and cocktail parties we will be following in the footsteps of Kate Middleton when snapping up a piece of this collection!
A range of high-profile guests including Oscar De La Renta and Valentino were in the FROW for DVF and she didn’t disappoint. Showing off a summery, light and airy range, the collection was wearable and everything we expected from the designer. The flamboyant prints and layering, as well as textured fabrics secured her as the Queen of the catwalk.
For DKNY it was workwear at its very best. With a big helping of ’70s retro chic, contrasting with some youthful tailoring, we have our SS12 wardrobe sorted.
Alexander Wang showed off an edgy ‘90s sportwear look for his latest collection. With mesh and neon at the forefront, it was a casual and slouchy (for want of a better word) look that seems to be the big thing for next SS, according to Wang.
With a difficult time slot, Victoria Beckham dazzled the crowds with a sophisticated and elegant offering. After observing the silences to remember 9/11 everyone sat back to enjoy the show. Clearly focussing more on the body, there was a large recurring theme of colour blocking and grosgrain straps. As navy, orange and black strutted mostly down the runway it was the coats and added outerwear that really had everyone talking.
For the first time in five years Helmut Lang was seen on the runway. The monochrome collection was decidedly raw with angled hemlines and splashes of canary yellow. Get ready to show lots of skin next season if you’re the brand.
Jason Wu also showed much black, white and grey but added in some colour pops with canary yellow and candy pink. With a petal print and more feminine collection, Wu combined playfulness with the sporty aesthetic. Peplum dresses added the fun!
All of the shows have us going weak at the knees in anticipation for LFW!
