It is clear that music has a widespread influence on the fashion industry and vice versa. But how exactly does music reflect the particular style choices of the artists? iFashion examines five female singers who dress in tune to the music.
Courtney Love
Grunge
Taylor Momsen may be trying to own the grunge crown, but Courtney Love was rocking out in fishnets and leather before Taylor was out of nappies. Her music is throaty, gritty and full of attitude, which translates into her personal style. Black, lace and leather teemed with bright red lips, or loosely structured evening gowns worn with disheveled hair, are her signatures. A penchant for sheer means Love’s looks are entirely translatable to more modern fashions.
Nicki Minaj
Hip Hop/RnB
When Nicki burst onto the music scene in 2010, the fashion and music world stood to attention. An explosion of colour, angles and studs, this veritable Fashion chameleon changes wigs as often as she changes vocal tones in her infectious songs. Appearing on various ‘fashion police’ panels, Nicki’s choices are loud, impractical and overtly sexual – but that’s just why we love her. Fearless and fun fashion lends itself to theatrical, witty and confident lyrics. “Pink wig, thick ass-give em’ whiplash” indeed.
Adele
Soul
Adele once stated that she hated fashion. That was before designers were clambering over themselves to dress her. A voice as strong and timeless as Adele’s calls for some pretty impressive and classic designs to compliment. The plus-sized powerhouse is often wearing black and is a fan of simple structures and lines, always managing to look polished and elegant. Then again, we wouldn’t expect anything less from the Grammy award-winning songstress.
Lady Gaga
Pop
It would be futile to compile a top five list without mentioning Gaga. The superstar almost needs no introduction, so widespread is her influence. Early fashion choices make comparisons to Nicki Minaj plausible, but recently the couture queen has gone where few humans dared to go before. Meat dress, Lion mane, corpse bride, Kermit confusion – Gaga has tried it all. Dare we say we no longer bat an eyelid? After all, she was born that way.
Oh Land
Miscellaneous
Gorgeous, ethereal and oh so stylish, Danish singer Oh Land has recently crept onto our radar. Her music is atmospheric, dreamy and futuristic whilst retaining a classical nostalgia and age old reverence. Her fashion sense can be described in much the same way, classically elegant whilst refreshingly modern. The fashion world have already taken notice, inviting Oh Land to take a front row seat at the Matthew Williamson A/W 11 show. Expect big things!
