Just as minimilasim seems set to be the trend that defines the time, bold prints are creeping back as an antithesis to the ‘keep it simple’ mentality. There is something about loud prints and pattern that inject a sometimes much needed ‘light-heartdness’ into fashion, and promise to brighten up even the dullest of the looming autumn days.
Animal prints, particularly leopard have dipped in and out of fashion for years. The new season prints, however, are steering away from the relatively ‘safe’ territory of tried and tested patterns. Topshop Uniques, A/W collection literally went dotty for dalmation spots and Balmain updated the leopard look with gold hues and studs for added animal magnetism.
Star prints that are large and cartoonish are also set to have a huge moment thanks to Dolche and Gabbana’s A/W collection. Ellie Goulding, Luci Liu and Fergie have all been seen rocking large star prints lately. Fergie wore a Dolce and Gabanna mini dress, with mixed sized stars strewn across it for the Teen Choice Awards.
Mixing prints can be tricky and is often only championed by the more experienced fashionista (think Anna Dello Russo.) Whilst mismatching is one of the hardest looks to style, a few key tips will help to achieve the look seamlessly. Keeping the sillouette sleek and uncomplicated, is the number one rule. Because prints can be overpowering, it is best to keep the lines of the outfit as downplayed as possible.
For those eager to try mis-matching for the first time, it is easiest to achieve when a common colourway can be pulled throughout the outfit. It is also important to keep accessorizing to a minimum, the print should do all the talking! Lastly, go with your instincts! If you look in the mirror and it feels right and gives you confidence you have mis-matched to perfection. If it feels awkward, then try a new combination.
