Planning to get some of your S/S wear early and take full advantage out of the upcoming sales? iFashion has outlined what to bag and what to bin for a great transitional wardrobe – all at the right price!
Bag Neon. Bin Wine
That’s right; the rich claret tones that were seen all over A/W runways are not suitable for S/S. Instead, look for neon pieces in the sale; from statement dresses to quirky neon clutches, it will give your wardrobe a fresh spring update. We adore this neon pink lace bodycon dress from Topshop; a steal at £48, it can be made winter appropriate with ankle boots and faux fur, or bare legs and slingbacks for spring.
Ditch ’40s. Wear ’50s
The prim and proper ’40s that defined A/W has made way into the flirty ’50s for S/S. Choose full skirted fit and flare dresses, crop tops and ditsy floral prints a la Miu Miu’s new collection. We like this delicate Anais dress, £40 by Annie Greenable at Topshop.com
Dump crochet. Embrace Lace.
Ignore winter crochet in the sales and buy delicate lace. Look to S/S Isabel Marant catwalk to see how the models wore loose and light French lace. Zara currently has a great selection of black lace dresses that will look equally chic worn this time of year. We love this button up lace dress, a steal at £29.99.
Shake off spots. Slip into stripes.
Sad to see the back of this trend, but the large circles spots and dots that dominated both Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney’s A/W catwalks all disappeared for S/S. Marc instead embraced the pyjama stripes and you should too. This long sleeve stripe shirt can be worn buttoned up or loose and has the perfect pyjama vibe to it!
Trash jewel tones, pick pastels.
The rich hues of emerald, topaz, citrine and amethyst gave our A/W wardrobes a truly decadent feel. For S/S, pastels are the shades to be seen in. Flirty and girly, opt for lilac, lemon and pistachio colours as seen on the Jonathan Saunders SS12 catwalk. This Topshop dip dye angora sweater will work for winter and see us intopring.
Say bye to the ’70s and hello to the ’20s!
The ’70s has stayed with us for a few seasons now but is well and truly over for SS12. With the release of the Great Gatsby remake due next year, it is time to find a new fashion era to channel. The roaring ’20s brought a touch of glamour to the Gucci catwalk, while Ralph Lauren was heavily influenced by Daisy Buchanan. This gorgeous embellished cape top from Miss Selfridge is the perfect piece of ’20s inspired attire.
Exchange a pencil for pleats.
Good news, pleats are back again! The somewhat restrictive pencil skirt should be put to the back of your drawers in favour of light and floaty pleated skirts. Prada championed the pleat for Spring and we predict a surge once again in the pleated midi. We like this Topshop metallic pleated midi (which ticks two trend boxes at once.)
Au revoir androgyny. Flirt with femininity.
Boyish clothes won’t cut it in the Spring, as super feminine pieces are back. The Valentino show had models floating down the runway in the most romantic and delicately embroidered maxi dresses. While our purses won’t quite stretch to afford a Valentino original (sob) we think this Goldie floral Maxi is stunning.
