iFashion was extremely excited recently to meet superstar stylist herself Patricia Field for breakfast as she shared some priceless style tips.

As she officially joins forces with Lenor Infusions to offer style tips and tricks to awaken your wardrobe, we spoke to her about online fashion!

Patricia’s take on online fashion was a little mixed. Although she likes the real life experience of feeling the clothes she said she shops online alot and sees it as a ‘tool’.

‘It means you don’t have to run around physically. It’s best to have it all both in real life and online,’ she said.

As the room listed intently, Patricia explained that with styling and clothes you can “put them together any way you want and come up with something cute”. She gave her styling tips based on a few everyday looks, starting with the T-shirt, which she described as the most “universal garment we all have”. Her advice was to put it with ‘a really proper jacket which gives a little chicness to it” or wear it with “sweatpants”.

She explained style is not all about the individual items in your wardrobe but about how you can put it together in different ways. Her main message: You can’t buy style! “Style comes from another place and it’s not the wallet,” she said.

Her second tip was about accessories. “Accessories can make or break an outfit,” she said, and they can “define your statement”. Patricia picked out the hat specifically as a great accessory. “The hat is important. It becomes visually graphic and grabs your attention,” she said.

She also talked about switching up with items in your wardrobe. For example taking one item and making it into another. “Turn a slip into a dress. It’s about playing with your looks, expressing who you are with what you wear.”

Patricia is working on her own movie and discussed her love for trying new things: “Life is only interesting when you’re learning something new,” she said. “If you just stay with what you know it becomes lifeless and boring.”

She described one of her own wardrobe staples as the pair of striped jeans she was rocking. Describing her look as “Rock ‘n’ Roll”.

With vintage a massive trend we all wanted to know where Patricia got her favourite pieces – the answer? Florida! She told us that by the time it gets to New York it’s filtered. “Florida is the source” she said as it’s where lots of people retire.

When it came to talking about those celebs she has worked with, she briefly mentioned one of her most famous masterpieces – SJP – calling her a ‘little fashion girl’. She said it was always fun to work with her and she was very responsive to all ideas. “She transforms into a Barbie doll,” she said. Patricia praised Sarah’s body and said “she makes anything look gorgeous”.

She also praised Lucy Liu who she said she always had a lot of fun with as they were both New Yorkers and they had similar experiences.

When it comes to rules Patricia said “Styling has a large part creativity. Trying to put too many rules into style can stifle it.”

She did let us in on a few though:

• “You must understand what is a fit and what is a misfit in order to look good”.
• Her second rule was about proportions. For example “a belt defines your silhouette”. And for those people who want to appear taller her tip was to elevate your waistline.

What else did we want to know? HER style icon! The answer? Cleopatra.

“Cleopatra lived 2000 years ago and we are still talking about her,” she gushed. We had never really thought about it like that!

She also praised a modern style icon – Victoria beckham and her individual style. ‘Her style is defined and she sticks to it. That is what style is about.”
