We love Brits in Hollywood and one who is about to make it big is Emrhys Cooper. Joining the cast of Desperate Housewives and already the face of a high-end fashion brand, we can’t wait to see this hottie in Wisteria Lane! We chatted to Emryhs about life in LA, his new role and of course fashion!
You have been in Hollywood for a couple of years now, do you miss home (the UK?)
I certainly miss the comfort and familiarity of home; and cherish the visits when I am able to get back to the UK. But, being in LA, living my dreams, I feel very fortunate. I am happy to call California a Home-Away-From-Home.
How does it feel to be the newest resident of the infamous Wisteria Lane?
I am over the moon to have the opportunity to be part of such a fantastic show. But I wouldn’t call myself a resident just yet!
Your acting career started on the West End stage but you are no stranger to TV. Which do you prefer?
Being able to perform at my craft (no matter the medium), is what I enjoy most. I honestly find equal enjoyment in either stage or film, but favor each for different reasons. Stage was my first home, and the adrenaline rush that you get, as a performer, from your audience is invaluable. But, I do find such a satisfaction in the fact that the film/TV mediums are captured forever, and can be revisited by many audiences to come.
Let’s talk fashion. You are the face of a new, high-end clothing line, Victor’s Promise. Have you always been interested in fashion? Yes, but I'm not certain my fashion sense has always been one of my strongest suits (no pun intended). Fashion, to me, is about being comfortable in what you're wearing, and making sure that you wear your clothing, and it doesn't wear you. I want to feel comfortable, and natural in what I put on, and look for lines that express my personal style with ease. I also find it interesting to explore characterization through outfitting (in my work) and am hoping to broaden my own personal fashion horizons, through the characters I portray.
Victor’s Promise is an athletic lifestyle brand. How do you like to keep fit?
Staying active helps to keep my head clear. I think, when you feel good about your body, your mind is also more on-target. I love the outdoors, and typically try to mix up my workouts, (sometimes opting for hiking, swimming, training at the gym, or dancing). Working out is just as much about feeling great in your skin, as it is looking great, to me. I also try to keep a healthy/balanced diet, and remember to get my rest. Sticking to a healthy game plan, helps keep me out of trouble….most of the time!
Do you have any style icons?
I am a fan of old Hollywood style. Classic icons like James Dean and Frank Sinatra are inspiring and timeless to me and truly embodied what a gentleman should look like. Style should be a reflection of self, I think (and not something put on for simply show). Present day, I think David Beckham always manages to look good (which I’d be lying if I didnt say I was a bit jealous of!).
Dress up or down?
I like to do both. I dress to fit the occasion. I don’t like to stand out for the wrong reasons.
You have 10 minutes to get ready for an awards show but haven’t planned what to wear, what would you put on?
Whatever is clean and ironed, I suppose. No, seriously, I am fortunate to have a few staple suits that I can turn to no matter the event. Some of my favorites are my navy Dolce and Gabbana suit, and I’m always a fan of Ralph Lauren jackets and polos. I’m not one to take long getting ready – just grab and go, and get on to the fun part -the awards show!
Do you have a favourite menswear designer?
I am a fan of Dolce and Gabbana, Reiss, and High Street. But, I am always one to try new designers -strive to be on the cutting edge, you know? Haha…
What is your opinion of men wearing ugg boots?
Well, it’s not personally a look I would go for. But, hey, no judgement…I say, wear whatever makes you feel happy and comfortable.
You starred in one of our all-time favourite music videos (Sugababes ‘Push the Button.’) How was it working with the Babes?
It was definitely a great experience. I dug them growing up (as most guys did, let’s be honest). I found them all to be really lovely, genuine and down to earth….further proving reality isn’t always akin to what the press makes out.
What is your proudest achievement to date?
I played a very intricate and challenging role on stage this year in Joe Orton’s “Entertaining Mr. Sloane,” the role really encouraged me to go to places (as an actor) that were dark, and not always pleasant. I love the sense of achievement that reaching new heights/depths/complexities in performing gives me. One of the greatest satisfactions as an actor, is breathing life into a role which keeps you on your toes and encourages you to step up your game. Sloane, did that for me.
Finally, any Christmas plans? What is your ideal way to spend Christmas Day?
I always make it home to the UK for the holidays (either in London or Devon). My ideal Christmas is enjoying the company of family and friends (especially now, when I don’t get to see them every day). The highlight of any holiday, for me, is the togetherness that they encourage. Christmas is a time to be grateful to be surrounded by those you love. My favorite highlight is watching their faces light up as they open the gifts I’ve brought). Doesn’t get much better than that!
