Going beyond a trend or passing fad, minimalism is one of our favourite fashion aesthetics. Clean lines, contemporary cuts and modern silhouettes make edgy minimalism easily wearable and instantly cool. Over styling need not apply, let the clothes do the talking and keep standout accessories to a bare minimum.
Asymmetrical hemlines, colour blocking and geometric prints are key aspects to an edgy minimalistic look. Acne championed the asymmetrically cut skirt for the A/W collection but it’s not just the bottom half hemline that can be uneven. Boxy cut tops and blouses look great with irregular hems for S/S, just keep the lower half simple to balance out.
For S/S, a sporty twist has taken over. Zippers, mesh panelling and raglan sleeves featured heavily on catwalks such as Alexander Wang. Best styled with sculpted separates to maintain a luxe edge, look to the Phillip Lim SS12 catwalk; where layering, streamlined silhouettes and relaxed fabrics created the true aura of a sporty sophistication. Try boxy tunics over skinny trousers, sweatshirts over pencil skirts and nylon jackets with cropped flares.
Punchy brights (yellow, lime green or hot pink) or faded pastels are the new way to champion colour blocking. Clear bright colours should be combined together to make a bold statement but keep silhouettes streamlined. Why not try a bold, clean cut blazer and pair with a statement clutch in a contrasting colour. Wear with leather pants for day or silk city shorts and high pointed heels for a night on the town.
A failsafe way to inject edgy minimalism into your wardrobe is to invest in a classic leather biker jacket. A timeless piece that will work with nearly everything you own, try wearing with sheer layers underneath for a chic S/S update. Works with asymmetrical hemlines particularly well, so make it your new year’s resolution to experiment! Who said minimalism meant plain?
