Blogger Style: Jana Kirn

Every so often, we come across a style blogger with such a unique and innovative take on fashion that it causes us to re-evaluate our own wardrobes. This was exactly the case with Jana Kirn, author of Wolf and Willow. Teemed with photography that looks like it has come right out of the pages of a fashion publication, her blog and style is ethereal and beautiful.

What inspired you to start Wolf and Willow
Reading other personal style blogs inspired me to start my own. After months of reading my go-to style blogs that I would check up on every day, I decided that it was time to start my own. I wanted to create a virtual portfolio for myself and try to inspire other people just like the way I was inspired. Blogging is a creative outlet which has become a big part of my life.

What is your ‘signature’ look?
My signature look would be a little grunge mixed in with some bohemian hippie. Most of the time you will find me wearing long flowy pieces that are oversized, always accompanied with a beanie and layers of jewellery. Oh, and boots. Gotta have my boots! Comfort is really important for me, so sometimes I go as far as choosing outfits with the idea that I might be capable of sleeping in them.

Who is your favourite blogger and why?
I have so many favorite bloggers that this question is too hard to answer! Let’s just say that my top five who I am constantly pulling inspiration from is Ashley from pursenboots.blogspot.com, Madeline from jeangreige.blogspot.com, Britney from disarmingdarling.blogspot.com, Spell and Lizzie from spellsjewellery.blogspot.com and Nadia from www.froufrouu.com.

The photography on your blog is particularly outstanding. Is it photography that got you interested in fashion or vice versa?
Thank you! I like them both equally. One didn’t really introduce me to the other. I have appreciated photography ever since my mom gave me her old 35mm Minolta when I was 15 and I have always liked dressing myself and being unique in my style. I love how blogging allows me to conquer two of my passions at once.

You love to mix vintage with high street and boutique brands. What tips do you have for girls who want to start sourcing more vintage clothing but don’t know where to start?
The first thing you need to do is actually step foot inside a vintage store. It might be overwhelming at first, but think of it as a scavenger hunt. You might have to sift through five racks before you find something that wows you. Some of my favourite things to buy at vintage stores are coats and hats. I will allow myself to splurge on a coat if it’s in good shape, but I really don’t like spending too much money on other vintage pieces. Some vintage stores that I have been to while visiting NYC are ridiculously overpriced. Try to find a store that has a good mix of unique and in-shape items while still being decently priced.

Who is your favourite designer and why?
I don’t heavily follow runway shows from season to season, but I’m going to go with Marc Jacobs since he was the first designer I admired, and made me fall in love with grungy style. That man is a genius.

Do you think blogging has any negatives?
I definitely think blogging has negatives. You are putting yourself out there for the world to judge you and people will let you know exactly how they feel, good or bad. The negative anonymous comments that people leave on posts can be very hurtful. Ignoring them is hard, but it is the best thing you can do.

How do you see your blog evolving over the next few years?
I really don’t know where my blog will take me, but if I have the time and the right equipment, I will continue to blog for as long as I am happy. Many great opportunities come from blogging and branding yourself and it’s rewarding when a company or brand emails you with collaboration proposals. I plan on being open to anything that comes my way while still being true to myself and my style.

What is on your A/W wishlist?
My A/W wishlist contains about 10 different pairs of boots. Is that ridiculous? Hopefully Christmas will treat me well :)

Finally, what is your most treasured item?
My most treasured item that I own right now would have to be a ring that my boyfriend gave me five years ago. It never comes off my finger and I would be so sad if I ever lost this prized piece!
